Should HE be taking advantage of new web technologies now?

With many in the wider web community advocating the implementation of technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and WAI-ARIA now, should the HE sector follow suit?

Do universities hold fire, dive in or are there alternatives? Perhaps a pseudo-implementation that allows us to start using some features of these technologies today while guaranteeing a quality experience for all (even IE6-8 users with Javascript switched off, disabling many common work-arounds.)

This is something that I have been giving a lot of thought to, and I would like to see a workshop session dedicated to discussing the options.

  1. Definitely. Personally I think institutions should be now looking at embracing and implementing newer web standards, HTML5, CSS3 and all the lovely friends that are related technologies and are included in talks under the (almost) umbrella term of "HTML5" - jQuery, Geolocation, Device APIs, etc.

And it's under a session like this where we could look closer at the challenges and workarounds such as graceful degradation & progressive enhancement when it comes to modern web development and design.
